How to choose a bathroom mirror frame colour to match your decor

Cómo elegir el color de marco de tu espejo de baño según el resto de la decoración - Noluxa

When thinking about renovating a bathroom, the mirror usually comes last on the list, almost like a procedure: "any mirror will do, anyway, it's for seeing your face." But the frame of the mirror—when it has one—is exactly the same type of decision as the finish of the tap or the profile of the shower enclosure: a considerable sized metal surface, located just above the basin, that is visible every day in direct light. If the tap is brushed gold and the mirror frame is chrome without further criteria, the set does not clash dramatically, but it doesn't add up either. And when the mirror has an integrated LED light, a second variable appears that has nothing to do with the metal of the frame: the colour temperature of the light, which also changes how the rest of the bathroom is perceived. In this article we review what frame finishes actually exist in the catalogue, how to combine them with the taps and the shower enclosure, and what to take into account when the mirror incorporates lighting.

Quick answer

The mirror frame is chosen as another metal piece in the bathroom: ideally it should match the taps and profile of the shower enclosure, either matching (same finish) or in a deliberate contrast (for example matt black with gold taps). If the mirror has an integrated LED light, the colour temperature (cool, neutral or warm) is a decision separate from the finish of the frame and affects how the skin and the rest of the finishes in the bathroom look.

The mirror frame as bathroom jewellery

In a carefully renovated bathroom, there are three or four metal elements that are visible to the naked eye: the basin tap, the profile of the shower enclosure, the accessories (towel rails, toilet roll holder) and, if it has one, the mirror frame. Of those four, the mirror occupies the most visual surface area of continuous metal, because the frame usually surrounds a large piece located at eye level. That is why it is advisable to treat it with the same criteria as the tap: it is not a neutral element that "does not count", it is one more piece of the bathroom's metal set.

Not all bathroom mirrors have a visible frame. Many models have cut-out moons, without a metal profile, and in those cases this decision disappears: the mirror is neutral and all the personality falls on the taps and the shower enclosure. But when the mirror does incorporate a frame—as is the case with a large part of the Noluxa bathroom mirror catalogue—that frame enters directly into the conversation of bathroom finishes, along with the matt black, Black Gun Metal, brushed nickel or brushed gold that you already know if you have chosen shower enclosure taps or profiles.

It is easy to overlook this decision because the mirror is usually chosen at the end of the renovation, when the rest has already been decided: the tiling, the furniture, the taps and the shower enclosure. But precisely for this reason it is advisable to look at it more carefully, not less: it is the last piece that is added and, if it is not thought of as part of the whole, it can remain as a loose element that clashes with everything else, no matter how beautiful the model itself is.

Available frame finishes

Within the bathroom mirror collection there are models with frames in different metallic finishes, following the same family of finishes that is already used in taps and profiles of shower enclosures. For example, the CALIFORNIA MIRROR is available in brushed gold, Black Gun Metal and matt black; The CATANIA MIRROR expands the range to Black Gun Metal, matt white, matt black, brushed nickel, brushed gold and brushed rose gold; and the CONCEPT MIRROR is offered in matt black. The WALES MIRROR completes the offer of framed mirrors within the catalogue.

The following table summarizes, as a guide, how each finish family behaves visually and with what type of environment it usually works best.

Frame finishing Visual effect It usually combines with
Chrome Bright, cold, very neutral Light bathrooms and classic chrome taps
matt black Strong contrast, current look White bathrooms, with light wood or microcement
Black Gun Metal Black with graphite reflection, more depth than matt Dark bathrooms or with natural stone
brushed nickel Warm grey, no specular shine Bathrooms with natural wood or earth tones
brushed gold / brushed rose gold Warm, with character, without the shine of polished gold Bathrooms in cream, terracotta or green tones
Matt White It integrates with the facing, taking away the prominence of the frame Minimalist bathrooms, all white

Matching the frame to taps and shower enclosures

There are two strategies that work equally well, and the difference is in the desired effect:

Matching tones

Choosing the same finish—or one very close—on the mirror frame, the basin tap, and the shower enclosure profile is the safest option. A matt black in the three elements gives a very careful overall feeling, without surprises. It is the recommended strategy if you do not have much experience combining metals or if the rest of the bathroom (tiling, furniture) already has enough prominence on its own.

Deliberate contrast

The other option, increasingly common, is to combine two different finishes with intention: for example, taps in brushed gold and a mirror frame in matt black, or the other way around. Contrast works when there are only two finishes in play (not three or four competing) and when one of them is repeated in some other point of the bathroom—the furniture handles, for example—so that it does not seem like an isolated element.

A simple trick to decide between the two strategies is to look at the tap of the basin, because it is usually the first finish that is chosen and the one that determines the rest. If the tap is already a piece with a lot of character—a brushed rose gold, for example—a mirror frame in the same tone reinforces that decision without competing with it. If, on the other hand, the tap is a more discreet finish such as chrome, there is more room for the mirror frame to provide contrast, for example in matt black or Black Gun Metal, without the whole being overloaded.

2 metals
As a guideline, a bathroom reads better if the number of different metal finishes (tap, mirror frame, screen, accessories) does not exceed two. After three, the set begins to feel disordered rather than intentional.
Interior design criteria, not a technical standard.

If you have already chosen the profile finish for your shower enclosure and want to delve deeper into how chrome, matt black, Black Gun Metal, gold and brushed rose gold combine with each other—including the colour temperature of the bathroom light as an additional variable in that combination—we have a specific guide on profile finishes in shower enclosures that complements what you see here focused on the mirror.

LED mirrors: colour temperature is a separate choice

Up to this point we have talked about the physical finish of the frame: the metal, the colour, the shine. But when the mirror incorporates integrated LED light—like the models with demister from the LEDIMEX Canada series, with cold light of 6,500 K—a second decision appears that has nothing to do with the finish of the frame: the colour temperature of the light itself. A mirror can have a matt black frame and, at the same time, emit cold, neutral or warm light depending on the model. They are two independent axes: one is the metal that is seen, the other is the light that is perceived when looking at each other.

This matters especially in the bathroom because the mirror is often the light source used for daily grooming and makeup, and the colour temperature changes how your skin tone looks and, indirectly, how the rest of the warm or cool finishes in the bathroom are perceived (gold taps, earth-toned tiling, etc.).

colour temperature Sensation Combines best with
Warm (approximately around 3,000 K) Yellowish light, relaxed atmosphere Gold frames, brushed nickel, wood
Neutral (guideline, around 4,000 K) Balanced white, general purpose Any finish, "safe" option
Cold (6,500 K in the LEDIMEX Canada series) Blue-white light, very sharp for detail matt black, Black Gun Metal, current environments

The advantage of a mirror with LED light and a demister function, like the one in the Canada series, is that it solves two problems at the same time: direct lighting for the bathroom and condensation after the shower, which usually fogs up the mirror just when it is most needed. When evaluating this type of mirror, it is advisable to look at both the finish of the frame (if it has one) and the colour temperature indicated on the product sheet, because they are two independent pieces of information that must be decided separately.

Coloured frames and tinted glass are different

It is convenient to distinguish two concepts that are sometimes confused because they both speak of "colour" in a mirror. One is the finish of the frame , which is the metal (or profile) that surrounds the moon, as in the CATANIA MIRROR, available in Black Gun Metal, matt white, matt black, brushed nickel, brushed gold and brushed rose gold. The other is the tinted glass , that is, the reflective moon itself with a coloured tone, as occurs in the TORINO MIRROR, with mirror variants in matt black, mocha, cobalt grey, coral pink, matt white and ocean blue.

A coloured frame changes what is seen around the reflection; A tinted glass changes the reflection itself, giving a subtle colour tone to everything seen in the mirror. They are two ways to add personality to the bathroom, but with a very different effect: the coloured frame is a "jewellery" decision that is combined with the taps, while the tinted glass is a decision closer to that of the chromatic environment of the bathroom itself (walls, textiles), and it is advisable to try it calmly before deciding, because its effect is more difficult to undo if it does not convince once installed.

Electrical installation near water: requirements to respect

Important

A mirror with integrated LED light is an electrical appliance installed in a humid area. The connection must respect the safety distances from the shower or bathtub area and the degree of protection (IP) required by the Low Voltage Electrotechnical Regulations for each volume of the bathroom. This type of installation should always be done by a qualified electrical installer, following the mirror manufacturer's instructions.

In addition to the electrical part, a metal frame in a humid environment has its own maintenance: it is advisable to dry it with a cloth after each intensive use of the bathroom and avoid abrasive cleaning products or bleach, which can damage finishes such as brushed gold or Black Gun Metal over time. A slightly damp microfibre cloth is usually sufficient for regular use.

Quick tab

  • What to combine: the finish of the mirror frame with the taps and the shower enclosure, tone on tone or in contrast with just two metals.
  • Available frame finishes: chrome, matt black, Black Gun Metal, brushed nickel, brushed gold, brushed rose gold and matt white, depending on the model.
  • LED light: variable independent of the frame finish; The Canada series from LEDIMEX offers cold light of 6,500 K with a demister function.
  • Colored frame ≠ tinted glass: the frame changes the environment of the reflection, the tinted glass (as in the TORINO MIRROR) changes the reflection itself.
  • Electrical installation: always by a qualified installer, respecting the REBT and safety distances from water.

How we created this guide

This article has been prepared from the technical data sheets of the bathroom mirror models in the Noluxa catalogue, the installation and maintenance instructions of the manufacturers (IMEX, GME) and general criteria for combining finishes in bathroom interior design. No own laboratory tests have been carried out; The colour temperature and degree of electrical protection data correspond to the manufacturer's sheet for each model and must be confirmed in the specific product sheet before purchase.
