Hand showers, adjustable jets and shower squeegees: accessories that extend your shower's life

Mango de ducha, jet regulable y limpiamamparas: los accesorios que alargan la vida de tu ducha - Noluxa

When you think about renovating your shower, the first thing that comes to mind is usually the shower enclosure or the column. But there are three smaller—and much cheaper—accessories that influence everyday life as much or more: the hand shower that you hold in your hand, the adjustable jet or shower head fixed to the ceiling or wall, and the shower squeegee, the squeegee that removes water from the glass after each use. Each one fulfills a different function and, combined, they are the ones that really extend the useful life of a newly installed shower enclosure, taps and profiles.

Quick answer

The hand shower is the piece you hold in your hand (move the jet where you want); The adjustable jet or shower head is a fixed ceiling or wall diffuser with several jet positions; and the shower squeegee is a squeegee to remove water from the glass after the shower. Neither replaces the other two: the handle and jet distribute the water, and the shower squeegee reduces limescale and soap that build up afterwards.

Hand showers: the component you hold

The hand shower – also called a hand shower – is the element that you hold in your hand during the shower: to rinse your hair, direct the water to a specific point or wash the shower tray or shower enclosure when you finish. It is connected to the taps by means of a flexible shower hose and, in most installations, it rests on a sliding or fixed support on the column bar.

In the NOLUXA catalogue we find, for example, the Austin hand shower , available in Chrome, Matt White and matt black, and the Arizona hand shower , with a greater variety of finishes: Chrome, Black Gun Metal, matt black, brushed nickel and brushed gold. The most complete models incorporate several jet positions (for example, normal jet and softer or massage jet), while the simplest versions offer a single type of water outlet. Neither option is "better" in the abstract: it depends on whether your home uses the shower only for a quick wash or if you value being able to change the shower depending on the moment.

A practical aspect that is often overlooked is the weight and grip of the handle. A body that is too light or with a narrow handle is uncomfortable for large hands or for those holding it with soap in their hands. Therefore, within the same series, it is advisable to look at the diameter of the head and the type of surface (smooth or with non-slip relief) before deciding on the model.

Adjustable ceiling or wall jets and shower heads

The jet – also called the shower head – is the fixed diffuser, normally installed on the ceiling or high on the wall, through which the main jet of the shower comes out without you having to hold anything with your hand. Unlike the handle, it does not move: its function is to cover a large surface with a constant stream, whether of soft rain or higher pressure.

NOLUXA distributes original IMEX models in this category, such as the Adjustable Square Shower Jet — designed as an original replacement for an IMEX product, in a Chrome finish — and the High Pressure Shower Head with Hose , which incorporates an ergonomic handle with 5 jet positions. This second case is a good example that the border between "fixed jet" and "hand shower" is sometimes blurred: some high-pressure jets include their own hose and adjustable handle, functioning almost like a hand shower with more flow and several selectable positions.

When choosing an adjustable jet, the important thing is to check two things before buying: the type of thread or connection of your current installation (to know if the jet is compatible as a direct replacement) and if you are looking for more perceived pressure (more concentrated jet) or more coverage (rain-type jet, more dispersed). Manufacturers usually indicate this information in the product's technical data sheet.

Hand showers, jets and squeegees: their differences

Seen separately, it is easy to confuse what each accessory is for. This table summarizes the function, location and role of each one within the shower:

Accessory Location Main function
hand shower It is held by hand, supported by a support Direct the jet to a specific point; rinse and clean
Adjustable jet / shower head Fixed on ceiling or high wall Main stream, constant, without holding anything
shower squeegee Stores hanging in the shower Remove water from the glass after each shower

The first two distribute water; The third, the shower squeegee, does not touch the water circuit at any time: it is a maintenance tool that is used after closing the tap, and that is why it tends to go unnoticed in renovations, although it is the one that saves the most time in the long term.

Finishes vary by accessory

Not all bathroom accessories are manufactured in the same variety of finishes. Shower handles and shower squeegees, being more decorative and visible pieces, are usually offered in more colours than technical jets, which prioritize function over appearance:

Number of finishes per model, according to the details of each product in the NOLUXA catalogue as of the date of publication. The catalogue may vary; Consult the details of each product to confirm the available finish.

This difference has a simple explanation: the shower squeegee and the handles are pieces that are constantly seen and touched, so it makes sense that they are available in Chrome, Black Gun Metal, matt black, brushed nickel, brushed gold and, in the case of the shower squeegee, also brushed rose gold, to be able to combine them with the taps or the profiles of the shower enclosure. Replacement technical jets, on the other hand, are usually manufactured in Chrome because their function is to replace an original part and fit into existing installations.

Shower squeegees: extending the life of glass

2 gestures
Wiping the screen cleaner over the glass and the lower profiles after each shower is, in practice, all that is needed to significantly reduce the limescale and soap residue that dries on the surface.
Manufacturer's usual maintenance recommendation.

When water dries on the glass, it leaves behind the dissolved minerals—what we know as limescale—along with traces of soap or gel. If this is repeated shower after shower without anyone removing the water, these remains accumulate and end up forming an opaque film that costs much more to remove than if it had been prevented from the first day. The shower squeegee avoids precisely that first step: by passing the rubber squeegee across the glass as soon as you finish showering, you remove most of the water before it dries, and with it a good part of the minerals that accompany it.

It is a low-cost accessory compared to the rest of the shower enclosure, but its effect is not only aesthetic. The limescale accumulated over months can attack the shine of the glass and, in the metal profiles of the shower enclosure, cause dirt to settle in the joints and screws, complicating the cleaning and maintenance of the whole. A regularly used shower squeegee is simply the simplest way to ensure that the investment made in the shower enclosure and taps – treated with technologies such as PVD to better resist corrosion – will last for more years without requiring frequent aggressive cleaning products.

In the NOLUXA catalogue, the shower squeegee is available in Chrome, Black Gun Metal, matt black, brushed nickel, brushed gold and brushed rose gold, designed to combine with the rest of the taps and profiles of the shower. If, despite regular use of the shower squeegee, you already have limescale accumulated on the taps, we explain how to remove it without damaging the finish in our guide How to remove limescale from the taps without damaging the finish ; The same principles (avoid abrasive products, act as soon as possible) also apply to the glass of the shower enclosure.

Maintaining accessories without damaging the finish

The handle, jet and shower squeegee share the same maintenance risk: overly aggressive cleaning products or abrasive pads can damage the finish before the limescale itself. This is especially important in finishes such as matt black, Black Gun Metal or brushed Nickel and Gold, where incorrect cleaning can leave marks or visibly alter the colour.

Important

Do not use bleach, hydrochloric acid cleaner or abrasive scouring pads on the handle, jet or shower squeegee: they may chip or discolour finishes such as PVD, matt black or brushed finishes. For regular maintenance, just water, a soft cloth and, if limescale needs to be descaled, a specific non-abrasive product applied according to the manufacturer's instructions.

In the specific case of the shower squeegee, it is also advisable to rinse the rubber from time to time under the tap so that it does not accumulate soap residue that, instead of cleaning, ends up dragging along the glass. And if your hand shower incorporates multiple jet positions, periodically check that the head holes are not clogged by limescale: a head with partially clogged outlets forces more pressure than necessary and can shorten the life of the internal seals.

Quick tab

  • Hand shower: hand held; some models offer multiple jet positions (e.g. Austin, Arizona).
  • Adjustable jet/head: fixed to ceiling or wall; It may include a hose and handle with several positions (e.g. IMEX high pressure shower head, 5 positions).
  • shower squeegee: squeegee to remove water from the glass after showering; Reduces limescale and soap buildup.
  • Common finishes: Chrome, matt black, Black Gun Metal, brushed nickel, brushed gold, brushed rose gold (depending on model).
  • Recommended cleaning: water and soft cloth; Avoid bleach, hydrochloric acid cleaner and abrasive scouring pads.

How we created this guide

This content is prepared from the technical data sheets of the products in the NOLUXA catalogue (shower handles, jets and shower squeegee), the maintenance instructions from the manufacturers IMEX and GME, and NOLUXA's customer service experience with real incidents of limescale and wear of finishes. Does not include own laboratory tests; The figures for jet positions and finishes correspond to the models mentioned and may vary depending on the reference.
